Which are frameworks used for PHP website development?

Before talking about the PHP Frameworks, let's get a bit familiar with PHP language. What makes this language and its frameworks adopted by millions of PHP Developers!! Well, PHP is one of the most popular and the simplest open source server side scripting language which was designed to build dynamic web pages. The advantages of PHP include faster implementation of solution making it cost effective by reducing development time, easy to interface with Apache/Mysql and the applications developed in PHP run faster on internet, cross platform, easy to integrate with other technologies, suitable for reuse, flexible on after development enhancements, supports multilingual features and easy maintenance.

All the frameworks of PHP are quite popular among the developer community for their simplicity and modular form which provides a platform to design robust applications and reusable components that speeds up the development process. However, here we will discuss some of these PHP frameworks that are a bit more popular and have a huge user base.

Let's start with CakePHP. One of the oldest PHP frameworks.

CakePHP:

CakePHP is the most popular open source, rapid development framework of PHP which is modeled on the principles of RoR and uses very well known software designing patterns and software engineering patterns.

Around year 2005, Michal Tatarynowicz, a Polish programmer wrote a smaller version of a rapid application in PHP which he named as Cake and published it under MIT license in the later part of 2005. This exposed Cake to the CakePHP Developers community and helped in promoting the growth of Cake over years. Till about the end of 2005 Cake Software Foundation was formed by G. J. Woodworth and L. Masters to endorse the development of CakePHP. The first version of the software (Version 1.0) was released in May 2006.

Since then, CakePHP have been continuing its journey and have succeeded to retain the popularity while expanding its user base that is been constantly working on developing the framework.

Magento:

Magento is the most popular open source eCommerce platform build in Zend framework and launched in the year 2008. It was originally developed by an US based private company formed by a student Roy Rubin which he named as Varien Inc. Magento was designed in an attempt to overcome the shortcomings of a then prevalent eCommerce software called OS Commerce.
The first version of Magento was independently made by Varien Inc. in 2008 but, in the later part of the same year eBay bought a large amount of share and slowly it completely acquired Varien Inc. Till 2016 Varien has been working as a separate division of eBay until it got separated to form a new company called Magento Inc.

Laravel:

Laravel is a powerful open source PHP framework that was created in an attempt to provide an advanced alternative to CodeIgnitor framework which was not capable of providing certain features. The creators had an intention of developing powerful web applications using Laravel. First beta version of Laravel was released in the year 2011 and by the beginning of 2015 Laravel was one among the most popular frameworks of PHP.
The syntax of Laravel is elegant and highly expressive which provides the websites developed using Laravel an artistic touch while being less time consuming. It's backed by a huge community which makes help and support handy.

CodeIgniter:

CodeIgniter is a simple yet very powerful framework of PHP. It’s easy to use and lightweight popular for it’s flexibility and hassle free installation. CodeIgniter is built on a easy to use liner folder structure that allows streamlining the codes of a webpage.
CodeIgniter is very easy to learn and implement having an easy learning curve which makes it widely adoptable by new programmers.

Zend:

Zend is popular due to it’s simplicity, flexibility towards incorporating new features of latest versions of PHP and new utilities. It's an object oriented open source PHP framework having an unique structure of components each designed with some dependency on the other. CodeIgniter follows solid object oriented design principles providing the developers with the flexibility of using the different components at will. It also has a varied range of features that facilitate application development quality.

Concluding Note:

There are also many other well known PHP frameworks like WordPress, Python, Ruby on Rails, Yii etc. The common thing about all the PHP frameworks is, these are extremely simple and well structured which makes them easy to learn and widely acceptable by the programmers and PHP Development Companies.
